Lily

Lily is a composite merging two distinct source images: a figurative nude study and a botanical water garden. The human form dissolves into a canopy of lily pads and lotus blossoms, the body rendered nearly translucent as the pond's surface asserts itself through skin and contour.

The cool, desaturated tones of the figure contrast with the muted purples, dusty pinks, and deep greens of the lily pads, creating a palette that feels both otherworldly and deeply still.

The composition draws on a long tradition from Pre-Raphaelite painting to pictorialist photography — while the double-image process introduces an unmistakably contemporary consciousness: this is not a body in nature, but a body as nature.

The title, Lily, operates on two levels: the water lily that populates the frame, and the suggestion of a given name — intimate, personal, elegiac.
